Couch Critic: The Impossible

4 out of 5 stars
I’m giving this a soft four stars mostly earned due to the dazzling special effects and sound editing. There is one major thing wrong with this film if I’m critiquing here. The (based on a true) story pits an affluent white family against a natural disaster but speaks nothing of the local people’s tragedy. Why should we care if this five-some survives? Its perspective largely ignores the message of the universal human will to live, in favor of one that says a western family who love one another is the important narrative, and that they will find a way. There is so much more here in regards to the common spirit that connects us and it’s a shame it was overlooked for a Hollywood-colored lens view.
