Couch Critic: Celeste & Jesse Forever

2 out of 5 stars
When you have a movie written by Rashida Jones, produced by Rashida Jones, and starring Rashida Jones, you get a movie for Rashida Jones. She’s the martyr of this narrative. But I don’t feel sorry for her. It’s an ok movie, but mostly skews towards a female demographic. A tad predictable in plot ups and downs, it lands all the key moments of a romantic film harboring comedic overtones, but does so with a lack of originality or full commitment. I mean, there’s even a karaoke bit… The emotional pivots fail to hit hard and honest, and the dialogue is rote. The movie is piecework and the themes actually manage to be both half-baked and blatant at the same time.
